A Brief Introduction of Cable Glands and Its Various Types

Cable glands are the mechanical cable entry devices or tools that can be manufactured from the metallic or non-metallic materials. They are mechanical fittings, which form part of electrical installation. Their motive is to seal cable and keep it in electrical equipment to which they are attached or fixed. Plus they maintain ingress protection rating of enclosure and thus keep the dust and moisture away and they too prevent cable from being pulled out of device and from getting twisted while connecting to the electrical equipment. In case these tools are intended to use with armoured cable, cable glands too offer earth continuity function.

They can be used on all sorts of telecommunications, data, instrumentation, control, electrical power and date cables. Apart from that, they are utilized as termination or connection and sealing device to make it sure that characteristics of enclosure in which cable enters can be maintained properly.

Types of Cable Glands

Many types of cable glands are present in the market and each of them is manufactured while keeping the varied needs in mind. Let us have a quick discussion about them.

Brass Indoor Type Gland

The brass cable glands are made by using the quality brass and they offer mechanical cable retention and continuity of the cable armoring. Their metric threads (male) are rated at IP 54. These electrical tools can be used with varied sorts of cables such as rubberized (sheathed or unsheathed), plastic (sheathed or unsheathed), metal, single wire armoured and many more.

Brass Outdoor Type Gland

These glands come in quality material to use in indoor and outdoor places with sheathed or unsheathed cables, single wire armoured, all sorts of SWA cables and so on. Plus the glands terminate as well as secure armouring of cable. Outer seal grips cable sheath and in this way, ensuring earth continuity and mechanical strength. Also supplied with integral earth facilities, these devices are recommended to utilize PVC shroud for the additional ingress protection.

Brass Straitening Unarmoured Cable Gland

Natural brass or nickel plated cable glands are utilized with different types of rubber sheathed, plastic insulated and unarmoured elastomeric cables. Size range of such fittings starts from 20 mm and reach up to 75 mm.

Brass Weather Proof Gland

These fittings are used specifically with the single armoured and varied kinds of SWA cables whether rubber or plastic sheathed. These types are known for offering uninterrupted services once they are fixed to wire and its components. They are manufactured in a manner that makes them suitable for any type of weather including rainy season.

PG Threaded Gland

Such glands are nickel plated and are custom made to meet the needs of diverse industries. There are several designs that are made available in market like round headed, hexagonal, spherical rectangular and any other designs that are required by customer.

Industrial Cable Gland

Electrical cable glands are suitable for rubber or plastic sheathed and wire braid armoured cable. Outer seal grips cable sheath and thus, it makes sure mechanical strength as well as earth continuity. These devices are recommended to utilize for extra ingress protection.  Armour clamping comprises of three parts including lock nut and the sealing technique is compression type.

On the basis of compression, there are two types of glands such as single compression cable glands and double compression cable glands. These fittings are very important in residential and commercial places since they work as sealing device to ensure safety of equipment.
